Shooting as in Photography, not actually shooting a gun

Anyway, im aiming to shoot some portrait shots so should i take my 18-55mm lenses or my 70-300mm. Im leaning towards my 70-300 because of the whole "portrait shots should be shot between 85-100mm" concept. :/
Oh and does anyone know how to (When your shooting) to get a sort of black fading inwards to the face? Or do i add that later in PS?
ANDD one last thing, any tips for shooting in the city? Any city?

Long time no speak! Wow how much has dA changed since i was here last! Its a rather pleasant surprise!
I hope everyones had a good christmas and good new year! (Hope the stomach pumps werent whipped out ;)) But anyway, i diverge.
As many of you know, i havent been active on here for a while. Maybe since May 2008! And oh boy! Have i got some new gear / stories to share to you.
First and most major announcement, I have received Head Boy this year, as it is my last year of schooling. Pretty happy about this acheivement, so i really hope things go well for me!

We are having a contest here at iPodWizard.net.
Halloween is nearing around the corner.
The contest is as follows:
The staff here at iPodWizard.net is assuming that you all have iPods, right?
Well, you are supposed to "dress" your iPod up for Halloween.
You may alter the firmware (make a 'scary' theme), and/or do any hardware modifications (these are at your own risk) to make your iPod look as frightening as possible. You can even just put your iPod in a scary scene, such as a haunted house or graveyard! Then just take a picture(s) of

lots of ways to add a vignette with a filter...I love vignettes! Best to do it post production so you have control and choices.......and tomloth, it dont suck
